Nonprofit news sites need business help

NEW YORK (AP) — The growing number of nonprofit news websites say they need more help from business experts than journalists.

A study released Monday by the Pew Research Center said that many of these reporting sites haven't expanded their funding beyond the grants that got them started. When asked their greatest need, more of the sites talked about business and marketing help rather than writers or editors.

Pew looked at the 172 nonprofit news sites that have emerged since 1987. Among them is the Pulitzer Prize-winning ProPublica, based in New York; the Texas Tribune, which covers public affairs issues in that state; The Hechinger Report on education issues, operated out of Columbia University; and MinnPost on civic life in Minnesota.

Despite the business issues, most of the sites are confident about their futures.
